What is ETA?

What is Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)?

An Electronic Travel Authority or ETA is an authorisation to enter Australia as a tourist or for business purposes. You may apply for an ETA online and it will electronically link to your passport once the ETA is granted. It is accessible 24 hours a day.

The ETA allows its holders to enter and stay in Australia for three (3) months at a time. The ETA is not for persons who are intending to extend their three (3) month stay in Australia, otherwise they must apply for the Visitor Visa.

Apply for an ETA

To apply for an ETA, the applicant must be outside the country of Australia. The applicant should visit only for business visitor purposes or as a tourist.

You can apply for an ETA if you hold a passport from one these countries:

  • Brunei – Darussalam

  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore

  • United States of America

Otherwise, you may apply for an ETA through a travel agent or an Australian Visa office. There are also other types of electronic visitor visas.

  • The ETA holder is not allowed to work or be paid to work
    1. The ETA holder is allowed to engage in business inquiries, negotiations, signing of contracts, reviewing contracts, participate in seminars and so on, as long as they are not paid.
  • If passport expires before ETA validity, the passport holder must re-apply for an ETA
