Scarlet Alliance, the Australian Sex Worker Association is demanding the Australian Government to expand the scope of 457 visas and to include foreign escorts. Jules Kim, the program manager of Scarlet Alliance stated that sex workers are just like other skilled workers who are allowed to enter Australia utilizing the four year work visa.
The Immigration Department of Australia does not consider sex work as a skilled occupation, that’s why sex workers are excluded in the list of skilled workers. The recognized skilled occupations include: massage therapists, recreation officers, dancers, entertainers, make up artists, fashion designers, dog handlers, florists, gymnastic coaches and cooks.
The Scarlet Alliance has informed the senate inquiry that like other occupations, sex work is still considered as skilled occupation.
However, the Immigration Department of Australia insisted that sex workers are not considered as “skilled” because the work does not require a diploma or degree. It is not even recognized as a trade qualification.
In response to this argument, the Scarlet Alliance informed the senate inquiry that it gives training for its members such as Diploma in Community Education.
